The 5th Wall

by | Sep 15, 2022

It is so easy to overlook, but don’t forget the 5th wall – your ceiling! And what an impact a well designed ceiling can have on your space. An amazing ceiling can create some drama or make a space feel more cozy. The options are only limited by your imagination.

Some of our favorite architectural designs are:

  • Coffers: The word “coffer” means “indentation.” As such, coffered ceilings are a series of indentions or hollows on the surface of a ceiling typically in a grid pattern. They are often trimmed out with millwork for a finished looked.
  • Beams: Whether structural or decorative, beams are an architectural detail that can create visual interest in a space. Beam styles vary from reclaimed wood to metal and stained to painted – depending on the desired effect for the space. Their thickness can also be adjusted to ensure there is adequate head space in the room.
  • Vaults: If you want to add square footage without changing the footprint of a space, go vertical. Vaulted or cathedrals ceilings gives a room an airy, open feeling.
  • Trays:  Trays often follow the contour of the room with drop-down border around the perimeter of the ceiling. The inside tray depth can vary depending on the height of the ceiling and the desired effect. Because most rooms are square or rectangular, most trays are also square or rectangular, but they can be any shape. Get creative!
  • Drops: Opposite to tray ceilings, drops are a twist on the traditional. Drop ceilings are frequently used in open concept spaces where they can help delineate one “zone” from another, like over a dining table, for example. For more drama, add some special lighting!

(Left to Right): Rectangular coffered ceiling, circular tray ceiling, asymmetric drop ceiling, quadrant drop ceiling
